Prof Hadi Heidari

Professor of Nanoelectronics

Professor Hadi Heidari (PhD, SMIEEE, FHEA, MIET) is a Professor of Nanoelectronics in the James Watt School of Engineering at the University of Glasgow, United Kingdom. His Microelectronics Lab (meLAB) conducts pioneering research on integrated micro/nanoelectronics design for medical (wearables and implantables) and industrial (quantum computing and ultrasound systems) applications. Prof Heidari’s research has been funded circa £4m by major research councils and funding organizations, including the UKRI (EPSRC and Innovate UK), European Commission, the Royal Society, British Council, Scottish Funding Council, and Royal Society of Edinburgh. He is a member of the RSE Young Academy of Scotland (YAS) and a member of the eFutures Steering Group (an EPSRC-funded network representing the UK’s electronic systems academic community). He is a member of EPSRC College and reviews proposals for the Croatian Science Foundation (HRZZ), the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and the Royal Society of New Zealand. He is a Senior Member of IEEE, Fellow of Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and Fellow of Royal Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (FRSA). Prof Heidari has been the recipient of a number of awards including the 2020 IET Healthcare Technologies Early Career JA Lodge Award, 2019 IEEE Sensors Council Young Professional Award, the Rewards for Excellence prize from the University of Glasgow (2018), Silk Road Award from the Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC’16), Best Paper Award from the IEEE ISCAS’14 conference, Gold Leaf Award from the IEEE PRIME’14 Conference.

Dr Carlos Garcia Nunez

Senior Lecturer in Electronics and Nanoscale Engineering

Dr. Carlos Garcia Nuñez (BSc, MSc, PhD, FHEA, MInstP, SMIEEE) is a Lecturer in Electronics and Nanoscale Engineering at the James Watt School of Engineering, University of Glasgow. He is an accomplished experimental physicist with over 15 years of experience in semiconductor nanowires and thin films for applications in optoelectronics, sensors, and energy. Dr. Garcia Nuñez earned his BSc and MSc degrees from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Spain), where he also completed his PhD with distinction. He conducted postdoctoral research in the United States and Germany before joining the University of Glasgow as a Postdoctoral Research Associate. In 2018, he was appointed Lecturer at the University of the West of Scotland, where he was awarded Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). He returned to the University of Glasgow in August 2023 as a Lecturer and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in August 2025. He has authored over 150 peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals from publishers such as Nature, ACS, IoP, and Wiley, accumulating more than 10,577 citations and an h-index of 41 (Google Scholar). His research has attracted approximately £2 million in funding from major organizations including Innovate UK, the Royal Society, STFC, and the EU Horizon 2020 programme. Dr. Garcia Nuñez is an active member of several professional and research communities, including SRUK and SUPA. He holds memberships with the Institute of Physics (MInstP), IEEE (Senior Member), SPIE, OPTICA, and LIGO. He also serves as a reviewer for the Swedish Research Council (NT-K) and is a member of the EPSRC Peer Review College.

Dr. Roghaieh (Pari) Parvizi

Lecturer in Electronic Engineering

Dr. Roghaieh (Pari) Parvizi earned her Ph.D. in optoelectronics from the University of Malaya, Malaysia, in 2012. During her academic career, she has successfully established an advanced nano-photonic research laboratory with a focus on fiber-optic sensing. Recognized for her contributions, she has received various awards, notably the National Third Young Scientist Festival in 2019. As a prolific researcher, Dr. Parvizi has (co-)authored more than 62 articles and publications in esteemed journals. In July 2022, she served as a Research Assistant in the Microelectronics Lab at the University of Glasgow, contributing to projects related to photovoltaic energy harvesting and wearable devices. In August 2023, Dr. Parvizi assumed the role of Lecturer in Electronics and Nanoscale Engineering at the University of Glasgow’s James Watt School of Engineering. Her research interests include advancing transient nano scale electronics, and sensors.

Dr Yawar Abbas

Lecturer in Electronics and Nanoscale Engineering

Dr. Yawar Abbas earned his Ph.D. in 2017 from Myongji University, South Korea, specialising in nanoscale semiconductor fabrication and characterisation. His pioneering research spans memristors, nanosensors, and triboelectric nanogenerators, securing prestigious national and international grants. With more than70 publications in top-tier journals, he actively reviews for leading publishers such as Wiley, Nature, the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), and the American Chemical Society (ACS).With over six years of research experience (as a postdoctoral researcher and research scientist) in South Korea and the United Arab Emirates, Dr. Abbas excels in supervising researchers in next-generation nanotechnology. In August 2025, he joined the University of Glasgow’s James Watt School of Engineering as a Lecturer in Electronics and Nanoscale Engineering. In meLAB, his group focuses on driving innovation in neuromorphic memristors and semiconductor packaging.

Research Support

Dr João Valente

Research Technologist

Dr. João Valente is a Material Scientist and Engineer with more than 15 years of experience in Nanofabrication and Nanotechnology. He obtained his PhD from the University of Southampton (2016) with his research entitled “Controlling Light with Plasmonic Metasurfaces”. In academia and over the years João had the chance to work on several different countries, research environments and research fields, publishing over 20 scientific papers with more than 1000 citations. In 2022, he moved to the industry joining a startup company developing a new laser technology (PCSELs). João is now back at the meLAB as a Research Technologist, bringing is technical skills, diversified scientific knowledge and managerial experience. His responsibilities encompass everything laboratories and equipment management related, daily operations of the research group, helping with proposal writing, project management and people tutoring and mentoring. On his free time, he loves to play football, taking photographs, exploring Nature’s beauty with his family and travel around the world (and beyond, when possible).

Dr Kathleen Menzies

Research Manager

Kathleen is a highly experienced researcher and administrator who has worked for nearly 20 years in primarily academic and educational settings. Her research focused on digital resources, information management, data, and users. Her most recent administrative role was supporting academics and students within the James Watt School of Engineering’s Transnational Education (TNE) partnership with UESTC in China. Kathleen earned her doctorate in Information and Communications from Manchester Metropolitan University in 2017. She is a graduate of University of Glasgow, having gained an MA Joint Honours in English Literature with Film & TV Studies back in 2004. Her MSc was gained at the University of Strathclyde, in Information and Library Science. She worked there as a researcher and PM for 3 years, in the Centre for Digital Library Research. Varied funded projects involved UK and European partners, including the German National Library, XEROX, University of Cambridge, and University of Glasgow. Kathleen’s role at meLAB is divided 50/50 between project managing the ARIA-funded NEUROBOT project and supporting the group’s many PhD students and post-doctoral researchers. For ARIA, she ensures coordination between partners, ensures reporting requirements are met, and that work is delivered on time, liaising with the project funder, and assisting with financial management in cooperation with other university teams. For meLAB’s students and postdocs, she ensures that resources, guidance, and compassion are always available, in coordination with the rest of the research support team, and its academic staff.

Dr Bhavani Yalagala

Project Manager ANALOGUE

Bhavani Prasad Yalagala was born in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, India, in 1991. He received the B.Tech. degree in electronics and communication engineering from the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU), Kakinada, 2012 and the MTech. degree in VLSI design from Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) University, Vellore, 2014 and worked as an assistant professor in the department of electronics and communication engineering till 2018 and pursuing PhD in the Department of Electrical Engineering (Micro & VLSI) from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Hyderabad. Currently working as a Marie Curie Early-Stage Researcher (ESR) at the University of Glasgow, UK. His current research interests include memristors, sensors, and novel device fabrication and characterization. He is a lifetime member of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE).

Dr Balazs Plosz

Project Manager GCR IZ

Balazs is a Project Manager at the University of Glasgow, based at the James Watt Nanofabrication Centre, where he supports advanced nanofabrication and sensing programmes. In his role, he works closely with academic and industrial partners, including supporting Neuranics with fabrication and scale-up activities, helping translate research into manufacturable technologies. His background is in applied physics and ultrafast optics, with research experience in nonlinear optics, gas-filled hollow-core fibres, and advanced UV and supercontinuum light source development for metrology applications, including collaborative work with ASML. He completed his undergraduate and postgraduate studies at Heriot-Watt University and is currently finishing his PhD there, with his viva pending. His research has resulted in multiple invention disclosure forms and patents. Alongside his academic work, Balazs has been actively involved in technology translation and commercialization, working at the interface of research and industrial deployment. Prior to moving into academia, he worked for several years in law enforcement and emergency services management, a background that continues to shape his approach to leadership, delivery, and working in high-responsibility environments.

Dr Chi-Wa (Zephyr) U

Post Doctoral Research Associate

Dr. Chi-Wa (Zephyr) U has been a UM Macao Fellow with the State Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI and the Institute of Microelectronics at the University of Macau since 2023, and is currently on a research visit to the University of Glasgow’s Microelectronics Lab. He received the B.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Macau, Macao, China, in 2019 and 2023, respectively, specializing in ultra-low-power analog design for biomedical circuits during his doctoral studies. His research interests include precision analog circuit design for Internet of Things applications and analog front-end architectures for biomedical sensing.

Dr Mohammed Mughal

Dr Mohammed Waqas Mughal is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the meLAB, James Watt School of Engineering, University of Glasgow. He holds his PhD and Post graduate diploma (PGD) from the University of Glasgow. He worked as a Analog IC Designer( KTP associate) in flexible IC design, research fellow and research associate before joining meLAB. His research interests include Analog and Mixed signal design, Cryo-CMOS IC design, Neuromorphic IC, Wireless Power transfer IC’s and AI hardware design.

Dr Venkatarao Selamneni

Post Doctoral Research Associate

Venkatarao Selamneni is a Research Associate in James Watt School of Engineering at the University of Glasgow. He received his B.Tech degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from JNTU Hyderabad and M.Tech in Microelectronics and VLSI Design from NIT Allahabad. He obtained his PhD from BITS Pilani, Hyderabad Campus in 2023. His research interests include the synthesis of nanowires and 2D materials, as well as the fabrication of nanoelectronic devices based on 1D and 2D materials and their hybrids for wearable optoelectronic applications.

Dr Mohammad Amir

Post Doctoral Research Associate

Dr. Mohammad Amir is a research-driven electronics engineer with over 20 years of professional experience in embedded systems, wireless communications, IoT, and intelligent sensing technologies. He is currently a Research Associate in the James Watt School of Engineering at the University of Glasgow. He holds a PhD in Electronics Engineering from the University of York, a Master by Research from Universiti Malaysia Pahang, and a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.  His expertise includes embedded systems, analogue and mixed-signal circuits, PCB design, IoT, wireless networks, GPU-based computing, and AI/machine learning for engineering and sensor-data analytics. He has contributed to the development of commercial products in telecommunications, smart agriculture, industrial IoT, and optoelectronic systems, and continues to collaborate with academia and industry to advance sustainable, intelligent, and scalable engineering solutions.

Dr Lucía Nieto Sierra

I obtained my BSc in Chemistry (2019), MSc in Medicinal Chemistry (2020), and PhD in Nanoscience and Materials Technology (2025) at the University of Cádiz, Spain. In addition, during my PhD I carried out a research stay at the Institute of Thin Films, Sensors and Imaging at the University of the West of Scotland, United Kingdom.  My thesis, entitled “Diamond/AlN based piezosystems: a path towards energy harvesting”, focused on the development of advanced piezoelectric systems for sustainable energy applications, with a strong emphasis on materials characterization through transmission electron microscopy. Currently I am working as a Research Associate in the James Watt School of Engineering at the University of Glasgow.

Dr Dibya Mukherjee

Dibyajyoti Mukherjee received the B.Tech. degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology, Kolkata, in 2017, and the M.Tech. degree (gold medal) in Electronics and Communication Engineering (Microwaves) from the University of Burdwan, Bardhaman, in 2019. He is working toward a PhD degree in the Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT Delhi, Delhi. His specialization in the PhD program is magnetoelectric antenna design for wireless power/data transfer in biomedical implants. His current research at the University of Glasgow, UK, focuses on high frequency magnetoelectric antennas, MEMS antenna fabrication, flexible wearable and implantable bioelectronics, and antenna characterization. His work was recognized by a best poster presentation Award at IEEE MAPCON 2023 and IEEE BioSensors 2024 conferences.

Dr Rolan Mansour

Post Doctoral Research Associate

Dr Rolan Mansour is a multidisciplinary research scientist with over 20 years of experience in biosensors, photodynamic therapy, transducers, composite materials, and chemical sensors. He earned his PhD in Chemistry from King’s College London (University of London) and has worked at leading UK institutions including the Universities of Glasgow, University of Strathclyde, and University of Manchester, contributing to high-impact projects in photodynamic therapy (PDT), optical biosensing, and non-destructive evaluation. His expertise spans clean room fabrication, thin-film deposition, photolithography, sol-gel chemistry, and advanced material formulations, underpinning the development of biosensors, point-of-care medical devices, VOC sensors, and particle detection systems. Dr Mansour has also established and managed research laboratories and developed patentable technologies for biomedical applications.

In March 2023, he joined the University of Glasgow’s James Watt School of Engineering as a Senior Research Associate to lead the PATIENT project. Dr Mansour current research work at the University of Glasgow focuses on developing innovative implantable microsystems for bladder cancer treatment through photodynamic therapy which is a promising treatment for cancerous tumours batteryless and wireless transponder microsystem with integrated impedance and bladder cancer detection sensor which aim to surpass the main challenge of PDT to foster improved developments and new perspectives towards enhanced PDT.

Dr Mansour has an established record of supervising MSc and PhD students, contributing to grant applications, and delivering research-led teaching. He has built an international research profile through pioneering advances in biomedical technologies and by fostering cross-disciplinary collaborations that bridge chemistry, engineering, and biomedical sciences. As Future Healthcare Technologists Coordinator at the University of Glasgow, he works closely with internal teams and external partners to address complex challenges and drive the delivery of the Research & Data programme for cancer treatment.

Dayhim (Dena) Nekoeian

PhD Student (since June 2026)

Dayhim (Dena) Nekoeian is a Research Assistant at the Microelectronics Lab (meLAB), where she contributes to the ARIA NEUROBOT project. Her research interests include mechanical design, magnetoelectric materials, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), and biomedical engineering. She holds both a BSc and an MRes (University of Glasgow) in Mechanical Engineering. During her postgraduate studies, under the supervision of Professor Sandy Cochran, she conducted research at the James Watt Nanofabrication Centre (JWNC), focusing on the fabrication of Capacitive Micromachined Ultrasonic Transducers (CMUTs).

Minghao Jiang

In 2022, he obtained a bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Nanjing University of Technology. In 2025, he obtained a master’s degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Glasgow. His current research focuses on advanced packaging. Dr Maria Cerezo Sanchez

Affiliate

Dr. Maria Cerezo-Sanchez, co-founder and CEO of NEUROBITE Technologies Ltd., a company dedicated to developing dissolvable neural probes to safely monitor and treat neurological conditions like epilepsy and post-stroke. NEUROBITE was founded in 2024 and is the second spin-out/spin-in from the microelectronics lab (meLAB) after Neuranics. 

Maria is currently an Enterprise Fellow at the Royal Academy of Engineering, has a PhD in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the University of Glasgow (2025) and a MEng in Biomedical Engineering (2021). She received the Dr. Alan Stirling Brown Prize in 2025 from the University of Glasgow for outstanding postgraduate research. 

Dr Siming Zuo

Dr Siming Zuo is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the James Watt School of Engineering, University of Glasgow. He received his double B.Eng. degrees in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the UESTC and the University of Glasgow in July 2017, and his PhD degree from the University of Glasgow in May 2021. He was employed as a Research Technician from February to May 2021 under Wellcome Trust Translational Partnership. His current research focuses on a next-generation wearable myomagnetic device for human-computer interactions. He received the SFB 1261 Fellowship, Germany (2018). His work was recognised by a Best Paper Award from IEEE PrimeAsia’18 and two IEEE Travel Grants to attend ISCAS 2019 and 2020.

Dr Meraj Ahmad received his B.E. degree in electronics and communication engineering in 2012 and recently submitted his (M.Tech. + PhD) dual degree thesis from IIT Bombay, Mumbai, India. Dr Tahereh Azargoshasb

Tahereh Azargashasp holds a Bachelor’s degree in Physics and a Master’s degree in Photonics with a specialization in Electronics and Telecommunications from the Graduate University of Advanced Technology (KGUT) in Kerman, Iran. She worked as a Research Assistant at the University of Bonab in the field of Optical Fiber Sensors. She will develop such a miniaturised, low-cost and room temperature magnetic sensor array under the guidance of Prof. Hadi Heidari.

With over eight years as a Design Engineer at Benha Company for Electronics Industries, I developed a strong foundation in analogue and electronic engineering. Dr. Stavroula Kapoulea is a Research Associate in the James Watt School of Engineering at the University of Glasgow. She received her BSc degree in Physics with specialization in “Electronics, Computers, and Signal Processing” (2016), MSc degree in Electronics (2018), and PhD degree entitled “Interdisciplinary applications of fractional-order circuits” (2022) from the University of Patras, Greece.
